A boating accident in San Diego on March 27 claimed the life of a father and son and left eight others in the hospital, according to The Los Angeles Times.  Chao Chen (73) and his son, Jun Chen (48) were both pronounced dead at the scene. Ten passengers were on the boat when it capsized. The boat outing was organized for mentally disabled persons, and Jun was reportedly disabled. Nearby boaters responded to the capsized ship, pulling the eight survivors out of the frigid waters.  Medical personnel treated the survivors at nearby UC San Diego Medical Center and Scripps Mercy Hospital for various personal injuries, mostly hypothermia. “The water temperature was probably in the mid 50’s,” says Maurice Lugue, spokesman for the San Diego Fire and Rescue. “They were shivering and cold, that was their main complaint.” Experts are still investigating the cause of the boating accident.  There were 10…

A judge sentenced Anthony Guarino to six years in prison on March 11 for his part in a drunk driving accident last summer, according to SignOnSanDiego.com. Guarino, 57, slammed his BMW into the back end of Marc William Durham’s Toyota as Durham sat at a red light. The accident involved four cars and injured eight people, including one child. Durham, 65, was driving eastbound on Camino del Norte at approximately 9 PM when the drunk driver struck him from behind. Police measured Guarino’s BAC at .15, nearly twice the legal limit in California. Durham was a former security chief for BAE Systems and was only one week into his retirement. “He was just so excited to retire,” said widow Elaine Durham, his wife of 42 years. Authorities arrested and charged Michael Gordon, 23, with felony involuntary manslaughter for a dog attack that left a young girl dead in January, according to the Charlotte Observer. Gordon’s two pit bulls mauled five-year-old Makayla Woodard to death on January 12. The dog attack occurred at approximately 11 a.m. in Gordon’s back yard. Makayla was walking through Gordon’s back yard to access a pen to play with her own dogs when Gordon’s dogs attacked her. Makayla’s grandmother, Nancy Presson, 67, tried to pull the dogs off the young girl. The dogs also attacked Presson. Presson suffered dog bites and scratches on her arms and shoulders, and Makayla died en route to the hospital. When local Waxhaw, North Carolina officers arrived on the scene, they pulled the dogs off Makayla and Presson. One of the dogs went back to attack the young girl again, forcing officers to shoot it.
