The 25-year-old motorist involved in a catastrophic drunk driving accident on Friday, January 10 was finally arrested on January 14. The motorist appeared in court Wednesday, January 15 where he faced three charges of gross vehicular manslaughter and driving under the influence causing great bodily injury. The collision occurred around 11:15 p.m. when the 25-year-old motorist and five passengers were driving in a 2000 Cadillac Escalade along 1-805 westbound near State Route 52. The motorist failed to merge properly onto State Route 52, swerved up the embankment and collided with a concrete pillar.
The force of the impact caused the SUV to bounce off the pillar and roll back onto the highway into traffic causing a multi-car pileup. First, an Acura did not have time to engage in evasive maneuvering and collided with the SUV. Then, another motor vehicle collided with the Acura and swerved off the opposite embankment onto both directions of State Route 52 traffic. Thankfully, the second vehicle did not cause further collisions. According to California Highway Patrol officials, a third vehicle crashed as well, but officials have not reported further details.
According to the police report, only one of the SUV passengers was wearing a seat belt at the time. Of the four passengers launched out the windows by the force of the collision, two died. The 35-year-old passenger who was wearing his seat belt also died. The driver was hospitalized until his arrest on Tuesday, January 14. Thankfully, the passengers of the other cars involved in the accident were not seriously injured.
