Amtrak Train Strikes, Kills San Diego Man

According to sources, an unidentified man died after an Amtrak train struck him on the tracks near Bay Park in San Diego on August 19. The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department reported that the accident occurred at Ashton Street and Morena Boulevard shortly after 11 am.

One of the passengers on the train reported that the man appeared to be standing on the tracks when he was struck. Authorities pronounced the man dead at the scene. The accident remains under investigation.

Amtrak is the largest private rail service in the United States, operating more than 300 trains daily in 46 states. The majority of train accidents occur at gates and crossings. The most common form of train accident are collisions with cars and trucks at crossings. Although they are less common than regular car and truck accidents, train accidents are very often fatal due to the weight of the train and the nature of most collisions.
