Street Car Race Leads to Fatal Collision

San Diego police are searching for a Mercedes driver who fled the scene after an illegal street race led to a fatal crash. If police find him, the driver could face charges of reckless driving causing injury, vehicular manslaughter and second-degree murder. On Sunday, September 14, witnesses report that a silver Corvette and a black Mercedes were racing westbound on Sea World Drive when the Corvette lost control and slammed into a tree. The passenger was rushed to a local hospital with injuries, but the driver died at the scene. The victim has not been identified. The Mercedes never made contact with the Corvette, but the police are counting the accident as a hit and run, because the driver fled the scene. Marine Killed in Hit-and-Run Crash While Riding Motorcycle

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the number of motorcyclists who died in traffic accidents in the U.S. more than doubled between 1999 and 2008, including reaching an all-time high in 2008. Unfortunately, many of those deaths resulted not from mistakes by the motorcyclists but their fellow motorists. Sadly, our area was recently the site of a hit-and-run motorcycle wreck in which a 22-year-old Marine lost his life, according to KNSD. The accident happened in the 300 block of Douglas Drive at about 8 a.m. on a weekday and involved a Budget Rental box truck, in addition to the motorcycle. As both vehicles were heading north on Douglas Drive, the box truck began to make a U-turn in front of the motorcycle.
