Are Hands-Free Cell Phone Devices Safer?

Many drivers believe that hands-free devices and apps for cell phones, such as blue-tooth and voice-to-text are a safe alternative to talking or texting on your phone while driving, but is that really true? “Hands-free is not risk-free, even though three out of four motorists believe it is,” said Peter Kissinger, CEO of AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, according to CBS News 8 in San Diego. “We know now that devices like voice-detect or voice-to-email systems can create substantial mental distractions, which can lead to degradation of driving performance.” Anything that diverts a driver’s attention from the road is distracted driving—talking, eating, grooming, controlling a pet, etc. It is best to lock your phone up in the glove box or trunk while driving to avoid the temptation. “You can literally look at something and not see it,” said Kissinger. “We have seen that situation occur in the real world. Lawsuits Continue From 2012 San Bernardino Bus Accident

San Bernardino, California is located near the Riverside metro area, sometimes referred to as the “Inland Empire.” San Bernardino has a population of 209,924 as of the 2010 census. Government and service industry jobs employ most of the area. Major interstates, including I-10 and I-215 run through San Bernardino, making it a transit hub for trucks, buses and passenger vehicles. Late in 2012, a bus carrying a group of tourists from Tijuana to Big Bear mountain and back crashed in San Bernardino on its way back to Mexico. Eight people were killed in the bus accident, and many of the victims’ families filed lawsuits claiming that the transit company, Scapadas Magicas, was aware that the bus had brake issues before the accident occurred—which was caused by a brake malfunction, the investigation revealed. One lawsuit even claims the driver had a passenger sit in the seat and push the brake pedal…

Troubling Tidbits from San Diego Distracted Driving Survey

A troubling new survey revealed that 30 percent of all drivers in San Diego are regularly distracted when they are behind the wheel, according to EHS Today. The Adult Cell Phone Survey was composed of research conducted between February 8 and March 31 of 2013, and to say the results are disturbing would be an understatement. “In this study, we were looking for the distracted driving trends of adults with children and employees [in the car],” said Linda Hill, MD, MPH and clinical professor for the Department of Family and Preventative Medicine at UC San Diego School of Medicine. “The results highlight the dangerous behavior of adults driving distracted, especially with children in the car, exposing both themselves and their children to increased risk for a crash. Moreover, employers should be aware that encouraging workers to initiate and receive calls while driving on the job is putting their employees at…
