Bicycle Medical Costs Are Increasing

Cycling can have great health benefits for folks of all ages. This athletic activity has become very popular, more so among people age 45 or older. However, the increased popularity comes with rising risks. A study conducted by UC San Francisco over a 17-year period found that with the increased popularity of cycling, medical costs due to cycling accidents increased by $738 million annually last summer. The same study found that in 2014 alone, bicycle accidents cost around $24.4 billion, considering both fatal and non-fatal accidents. The study stated that rising costs were due to increased vehicle traffic, changes in vehicle designs, and increased use of bicycles for community purposes. Outside of increased financial costs, data showed an increase in hospital admissions by 120%. Prince Michael Jackson Injured in California Motorcycle Crash

Prince Michael Jackson, oldest son of the late music legend Michael Jackson and Debbie Rowe, was recently hospitalized following a motorcycle crash in Los Angeles. According to TMZ, Jackson was riding his bike on wet pavement when he lost control of the bike. He wiped out and was injured badly enough to require an ambulance to transport him to the hospital. While inside the ambulance, he posted a photo on Instagram of his feet riding on a gurney. Jackson did not break any bones and was able to travel to classes not long after the accident. Were These Two Hit-and-Run Bike Accidents Related?

Three bicyclists in Danville were recently involved in a pair of hit-and-run crashes that left two seriously injured. The first accident happened in the afternoon, when a Ford Escape struck a cyclist on Diablo Road. The Escape fled the scene of the accident and the cyclist was not seriously injured. Around 40 minutes later, two cyclists riding on Diablo were hit by a Ford Escape. One was taken to the hospital via helicopter and the other by ambulance. The driver fled the scene. Are the two connected? Similar locations – similar vehicle – and both hit-and-runs. Did the same driver have two accidents in short succession, or were these cyclists targeted by the same person?
