Drones are making more and more appearances at sporting events. The cameras mounted to them provide great footage from an angle normally inaccessible or impractical to film from, but they also pose a significant risk to both participants and viewers of sporting events. Last year, a drone operated by a TV broadcast crew came crashing down a few feet away from a professional skier in Italy. And this year, we’ve seen a near-direct hit. A pro cyclist racing in Sacramento’s Golden State Race series was riding alongside dozens of other cyclists when a drone lost control and dive-bombed into the group of riders. May is Bicycle Safety Month – Promote Helmet Awareness

May is Bicycle Safety Month. The California Highway Patrol is using this month to promote helmet awareness among cyclists throughout the state and to encourage cyclists as well as drivers to share the road. According to the National Safety Council, helmet use reduces the risk of traumatic brain injury by nearly 60 percent. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety says that the risk of head, face or neck injuries goes down 33 percent when a helmet is used. Under California law, it is required for cyclists under the age of 18 to wear a helmet – but we encourage all riders, regardless of age, to do so. Every year, about 2 percent of fatal motor vehicle accidents involve the death of a cyclist. In the majority of these cases, the most serious injuries victims suffer are to the head. Hit-and-Run Driver Found after Deadly Bicycle Accident

The California Highway Patrol has located and arrested a driver involved in a fatal hit-and-run accident with a cyclist. The 44-year-old victim was discovered on the side of a road, gravely injured. He passed away at the scene. Police officers did not find a bike near the victim, but were able to find a trail of debris. About a mile away, they found the missing bicycle as well as the SUV that hit the cyclist. The SUV’s owner was arrested on suspicion of felony hit-and-run, vehicular manslaughter and destruction of evidence. There were no signs that the driver was impaired.
