How Often and Why Are Bicycles Subject to Recalls?

Cyclists may make the mistake of thinking that they are avoiding some of the risks that come with operating a traditional vehicle, but that may not be the case. Like cars and trucks, bicycles can also be subject to safety recalls due to defective parts that may cause injury or death. U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) research has a list of recalled parts on its website, cpsc.gov. Some of the recalled parts include bicycle chains that break and cause the rider to fall, seats that fall off, bicycle frames that break in half and failing breaks. Have Drunk Drivers Become a Threat to the Holiday Season?

Every year in the United States, thousands of people are killed or injured in drunk driving accidents during holiday travelling and just as many are arrested. Federal Bureau of Investigation crime statistics show that 1,166,824 Americans were arrested last year for drinking and driving. San Diego is no stranger to this problem, with over 15,000 DUI arrests in 2011. Drunk Driving Statistics Show an Out of Control Problem During Labor Day festivities earlier this year, San Diego law enforcement arrested 1,043 people on suspicion of a DUI over the course of one weekend. Data released every year by non-profits and businesses like Alcohol Monitoring Systems (AMS) further solidify the argument that drunk driving increases during the holiday season. AMS reports…

How Safe Are Pedestrians on Our Roads?

Recent incidents show that car accidents involving pedestrians are becoming more common in San Diego, with a pregnant woman being hit just earlier this week in Escondido and a former G&E employee being sentenced for striking a homeless man. San Diego Crime Stoppers and local police are still unable to find the driver who struck and seriously injured a cyclist in Ocean Beach late last month. With pedestrian fatalities on the rise, it is important to stay attentive to this issue to prevent future accidents. Pedestrian Accidents Are Extremely Common National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) statistics from 2012 show that 4,743 pedestrians were killed in traffic accidents and an additional 76,000 were injured. Most pedestrian deaths occur in urban areas and a large number of those killed are young adults and senior citizens. In a response to stem the tide of pedestrian deaths, the Federal Highway Administration has committed…
