Every year in the United States, thousands of people are killed or injured in drunk driving accidents during holiday travelling and just as many are arrested. Federal Bureau of Investigation crime statistics show that 1,166,824 Americans were arrested last year for drinking and driving. San Diego is no stranger to this problem, with over 15,000 DUI arrests in 2011. Holiday celebrations usually involve a lot of socializing and large amounts of alcoholic beverages, and for this reason, holidays have a higher level of DUI related arrests and car accidents. It is an all too familiar story in national headlines – drunk drivers making the ultimate mistake by getting behind the wheel of their cars. One San Diego resident is now facing a second-degree murder charge for his role in a deadly 2012 accident. On the morning of January 9, 2012, a drunk driver slammed head-on into two motorists, killing one and seriously injuring two others. During an attempt to return to his home in San Diego after a night of drinking at the Sutra nightclub in Costa Mesa, the driver lost control of his vehicle and ended up on the wrong side of the road. Prosecutors with the District Attorney’s Office in Anaheim argue that the defendant knew the risks of drinking and driving, but chose to get behind the wheel anyway.
