Drunk Driver Rear-Ends Ambulance in Del Mar

Several people were injured on Tuesday, October 9, when a suspected drunk driver slammed into the back of an ambulance.

California Highway Patrol responded to reports of an accident at around 1:25 a.m. The ambulance had been traveling in the northbound lanes of Interstate 5 near Del Mar when another vehicle rear-ended it and burst into flames.

Firefighters soon arrived and extinguished the flames without incident. Three people were hospitalized after the accident, but officials at the scene decided not to disclose which vehicle the victims were riding in.

Police did not discuss why they believe the man may have been intoxicated, but there are very few excuses to rear-end an emergency vehicle. The driver endangered his own life, but he also endangered the patient’s life inside the ambulance, who was already seeking help for an illness or injury.

When people choose to drive under the influence, they create an incredibly dangerous situation to suit their own interests. If their negligence kills or injures someone, you may need more than a police investigation to hold them accountable.
