Are Potholes and Poorly Maintained Sidewalks Causing San Diego Bicycle Accidents?

The San Diego Union-Tribune recently published an article on personal injury lawsuits in San Diego. According to the article, San Diego is facing multiple lawsuits for accidents caused by potholes, damaged sidewalks and trenches. These conditions caused deaths and catastrophic injuries to pedestrians, cyclists and others. The article describes multiple accidents that have occurred in the past several years. These accidents include but are not limited to: A man who died after hitting a protruding sidewalk in Old Town while riding a Segway. Segways are motorized scooter devices. A Sorrento Valley man who became paralyzed from the neck down after hitting a rock pile while riding in a bike lane. According to the man, he flipped his bike after construction workers left the rock pile next to an open trench. Have Cyclist, Motorcyclist and Pedestrian Deaths Increased?

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) released statistics that suggest traffic deaths increased for cyclists, motorcyclists and pedestrians in recent years. These groups are also called “vulnerable road users”. NHTSA’s most recent statistics, which cover traffic fatalities for 2015, show the following trends: Pedestrian deaths increased by 9.5 percent from 2014 to 2015. According to NHTSA’s findings, 5376 pedestrians died from collisions with motor vehicles during 2015. This is the highest number of recorded pedestrian deaths since 1996. Bicyclist fatalities increased by more than 12 percent from 2014 to 2015. NHTSA statistics show that 818 cyclists died during 2015. This is the highest number of bicycle deaths since 1995. Fatal motorcycle accidents increased by 8.3 percent between 2014 and 2015. More than 4,970 motorcyclists died in accidents during this period.
