For the fifth consecutive year, fatalities from car accidents have decreased nationally, with the exception of 19 states, according to USA Today. California decreased for the fifth consecutive year as well. Some smaller states, however, had opposite statistics. Connecticut experienced a 42% increase in car accident fatalities, while the nation as a whole experienced a 2.9% decline. Experts try to downplay these one year statistical abnormalities and look at the bigger picture. “You don’t want to make a big conclusion based on just one year,” says Jonathan Adkins of the Governors Highway Safety Association. “You need to really look at three to five years to see if there was a trend or if it was a blip.” North Dakota saw a 25% decrease last year, but the numbers are so small in that state that experts don’t take that into much consideration. Distracted drivers are a growing problem on California roadways, according to DigitalJournal.com. While many things can pull a driver’s attention away from the road, there is no debate that cell phones and other digital devices are amongst the most dangerous. Recently, awareness of the dangers of texting while driving has increased significantly. According to California transportation safety officials, deaths from distracted drivers have doubled since a decade ago. A family of four is hospitalized following a tragic car accident in San Diego, according to CBS 10 News. A Land Rover heading eastbound on Interstate 8 ran into the back of the Lexus SUV in which the family was riding. The California Highway Patrol estimated that the Land Rover was traveling between 80 and 90 miles per hour. The Lexus spun out of control onto the median of the freeway. It fell about 150 feet down an embankment before resting on the side of the highway. The parents were rushed to Sharp Memorial Hospital and the children—ages 6 and 10—to Rady Children’s Hospital. The children are in stable condition and the condition of the adults was not made available to the public.
