California Heavily Enforces Distracted Driving Month

Law enforcement officials in California issued more than 57,000 citations for distracted driving in April, which was Distracted Driving Awareness Month, according to KSEE 24 News. The California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) and the California Highway Patrol (CHP) teamed up to target distracted drivers across the state. “The month of April is behind us, however, distracted driving awareness education and enforcement continues for law enforcement statewide,” said CHP Commissioner Joe Farrow. “Inattention while driving is a dangerous behavior with potentially deadly consequences. Motorists, especially parents with impressionable children in the vehicle, are strongly encouraged to practice safe, legal driving behaviors. Distracted Driving Still Huge Threat in Southern California

Despite the ongoing efforts by public officials to raise awareness about the risks, distracted driving remains one the largest threats to motorists, pedestrians and cyclists. Traffic is notoriously heavy in Southern California, so distracted driving is a huge problem in the region. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), distracted driving accounts for 80 percent of US car accidents and 65 percent of near misses. Researchers from the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute (VTTI) reported that when drivers look at or send a text message, they take their eyes off the road for an average of 4.6 seconds. This may not seem like a long time, but consider this—a car traveling at 55 miles per hour will cover 100 yards in 4.6 seconds. GHSA Revamps Distracted Driving Guidelines

The Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA) has strengthened and revamped its policy for distracted drivers, according to the Sacramento Bee. The GHSA has called for legislators to ban handheld phones for all drivers and a total ban on all electronic devices for young drivers as well as school bus drivers. The Department of Transportation (DOT) reports that handheld cell phone bans have proven to be effective in New York and Connecticut, and police were able to enforce the new laws efficiently. Texting bans apart from complete handheld bans are more difficult to enforce, because a driver can claim they where dialing after being pulled over by an officer, not texting. According to the California Office of Traffic Safety, California had 460,487 handheld cell phone convictions for drivers in 2011 compared to only 14,886 texting while driving convictions.
