Drunk Driving Fatalities Increase in California

Recently, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) released 2017 motor vehicle fatality statistics. Altogether, there were fewer traffic crash fatalities in 2017 than in 2016. Though hardly an improvement, drunk driving fatalities decreased by one percent. In concern to California, there were 3,602 traffic fatalities in 2017. This means that California is no longer the deadliest state for driving. It is now the second deadliest state behind Texas. However, now more of California’s traffic fatalities include alcohol-impaired drivers. Up two percent from 2016, 31 percent of California’s 2017 traffic fatalities involved a drunk driver. With the holidays approaching, drunk and drugged driving will increase. If you go out and drink with friends and family this holiday, take a few minutes to plan ahead to find a sober ride home. Drunk Motorcyclist Plows Through Group of Cyclists

Getting behind the wheel after you’ve been drinking is a bad idea. Getting behind the handlebars of a motorcycle? Also a bad idea. According to the California Highway Patrol, a man from Clovis lost control of his Harley Davidson while riding in Fresno County. He veered off the pavement and while trying to regain control of his motorcycle, he hit a group of three men riding bicycles. All three men were taken to a nearby medical center with major injuries. The perpetrator suffered minor injuries which were treated at the hospital before he was booked into county jail on felony DUI charges. Drunk Motorcycling Normally, when someone suffers injuries in an accident involving alcohol and motorcycles, it’s the motorcyclist being hit by a drunk driver. California Bicyclist Killed by DUI Driver

A 59-year-old man in Oceanside was recently killed in a bicycle accident. The man was riding his bike in the late afternoon when a 19-year-old woman driving a 2002 Ford Explorer veered off to the right of the road, striking the cyclist. He died at the scene. Police arrested the woman on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs. She could face charges including felony driving under the influence of drugs and felony vehicular manslaughter. Fatal Bicycle Accident Statistics The number of cyclists killed in collisions in California has remained consistent over the course of the last few years: 164 in 2013, 142 in 2014, 153 in 2015 and 143 in 2016.
