California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers are searching for a group of young motorists that caused a disturbance and shut down four northbound lanes of the Nimitz Freeway in Oakland, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. Reports state that the motorists were performing “doughnuts” in their cars and burning the rubber off their tires, creating a large cloud of smoke. Several witnesses recorded the disturbance using cell phone cameras. “In my 35 years in the department, I’ve never seen anything like this,” said CHP Sgt. Diana McDermott. “It looks like something you would see in a video game or something, but these are real-life incidents, and it takes seconds—seconds—for a fatal collision to happen.” The group dispersed when officers arrived and no arrests have been made. A San Diego police officer was critically injured after his patrol car was struck by a drunk driver, according to the Sacramento Bee. A suspected drunk driver in a red pickup truck hit the cruiser after speeding through a red light around 2:30 a.m., according to Police Lieutenant Dan Plein. The officer was identified as Travis Bentley, a 24-year-old rookie on the force. The truck hit the drivers’ side of the car as the Officer Bentley was sitting in at a complete stop. He was trapped in the car before firefighters were able to free him. The officer was taken to the hospital with broken bones and internal injuries. The driver of the truck suffered minor injuries and was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving.
