Are You At Risk For Being Attacked By A Dog?

A dog bite can cause serious injury and even be fatal, so it is important to be aware of the risks that can come from your family pet or another dog in your neighborhood. Protect yourself and your family by taking precautions when in neighborhoods and parks. Elderly people and young children are particularly vulnerable to dog attacks. Here are some numbers to keep in mind, from the Centers for Disease Control:

  • 4.7 million people are attacked by dogs annually
  • 386,000 people require medical attention after a dog bite each year in the United States
  • On average, 12 people die annually from dog attacks

People generally associate pit bulls or German shepherds with dog attacks, but according to the CDC that is not always the case.

“There is currently no accurate way to identify the number of dogs of a particular breed, and consequently no measure to determine which breeds are more likely to bite or kill,” says the CDC.
