Five Teens Killed in Newport Beach Car Accident

A tragic car accident in Newport Beach claimed the lives of five high school students on their way to the beach on May 28, according to Orange County Sheriff spokesperson Jim Amormino. The victims were high school students in the Irvine Unified School District, three girls and two boys, ages 16 and 17. The Infiniti sedan the teens were traveling in veered off the side of the road and hit a tree. Some witnesses speculated that speed was a factor, but officials have not released the cause of the accident. “There are simply no words to convey the sorrow felt by our students and staff, nor are there sufficient answers to explain the loss of five vibrant teenagers from our schools and this community,” said Irvine Unified School District Superintendent Terry Walker to the Huffington Post. “It was a horrific accident.” Teenagers are statistically at a higher risk for fatal…

California Heavily Enforces Distracted Driving Month

Law enforcement officials in California issued more than 57,000 citations for distracted driving in April, which was Distracted Driving Awareness Month, according to KSEE 24 News. The California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) and the California Highway Patrol (CHP) teamed up to target distracted drivers across the state. “The month of April is behind us, however, distracted driving awareness education and enforcement continues for law enforcement statewide,” said CHP Commissioner Joe Farrow. “Inattention while driving is a dangerous behavior with potentially deadly consequences. Motorists, especially parents with impressionable children in the vehicle, are strongly encouraged to practice safe, legal driving behaviors. Lives depend on it.” Experts recommend placing your phone in your trunk or glove box while you are driving. It is tempting to send a quick text message or even just read one at a stoplight—but it is a slippery slope. The distracted driving numbers are actually down about…

Judge Finds State Trooper At Fault in Pedestrian Accident

A judge in Syracuse, New York recently determined that a motorist was at fault for a 2009 pedestrian accident, according to The Post-Standard. What makes this case stand out is the driver was a New York State Trooper who happened to be speeding at the time of the collision. Trooper Thomas Gallery ran over pedestrian Lawrence Perkins in November 2009 as Perkins was crossing the road. Gallery was speeding on his way to a court appearance—he was not responding to an emergency. The initial police investigation determined Perkins to be at fault because he was not crossing the street within a cross walk. State Court of Claims Judge Nicholas Midey did not see it that way. Judge Midey was particularly critical of the investigation conducted by New York State Trooper Brett Yorgey. “A pedestrian has an opportunity to decide not to continue [crossing],” Yorgey testified, defending his investigation’s finding. “And…
