A truck driver died in an accident involving an Amtrak Surliner passenger train on December 19, according to UT-San Diego. Emergency responders received calls reporting the accident in Cardiff, that a train had collided with a tow truck on the tracks. According to witnesses the crossing guards were closed around the truck at the time of the collision. The tow truck driver had stopped to assist a stranded motorist that was just west of the tracks, according to police reports. The tow truck was completely demolished upon impact and the driver was thrown from the wreckage. He was pronounced dead on the scene. The train was carrying 125 passengers, some of which sustained minor injuries. Twenty people were injured in another truck accident involving an Amtrak train in Hanford in October.
