MTS Wraps Up Investigation of Intoxicated Bus Drivers

An investigation by the San Diego Police and the Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) determined that three bus drivers acted appropriately last month after they inadvertently consumed brownies laced with marijuana before driving their routes, according to sources. Another MTS employee gave all three drivers the laced brownies before they left on their routes, and the drivers all pulled over once they noticed the effects. The drivers requested medical assistance and asked for replacement drivers to be sent out. “I think they were responsible by pulling over once they felt dizzy and stopped the bus,” said regular bus commuter Celeste McClure. Ron Roberts, MTS Vice Chairman, vowed to the media to get to the bottom of the incident. “This could have been a major disaster. It’s not funny. It’s not fun and it is irresponsible at the highest level,” said Roberts. “We’re going to be very open with the public about…

101-Year-Old Driver Hits 11 Pedestrians

An elderly Los Angeles man backed his car into a sidewalk and struck nine children and two adults in August, according to the Los Angeles Times. The driver, 101-year-old Preston Carter, struck the children as they were getting out of school. Carter turned 101 on September 1. The children, some as young as 14 months, were treated at a nearby hospital and listed in stable condition by that evening. The accident remains under investigation. Drugs or alcohol were not a factor. Los Angeles Police Department officials believe Carter may have mistaken the accelerator for the brake pedal. Carter told witnesses on the scene that his brakes failed. “It was a miscalculation on his part,” said Captain Jorge Rodriguez of the Los Angeles Police Department. “He thought he was turning onto the street.” This recent incident sparked debate about the elderly and driving privileges. In California, once drivers turn 70, they…

One Injured in Shelter Island Boat Fire

An explosion on a boat at Shelter Island off the coast of San Diego sent one man to the hospital with severe burns to his hands, face and legs, according to sources. San Diego police received calls of an explosion and fire on a boat at approximately 6 a.m. on September 15. According to police reports, the 32-year-old man was backing the boat down a ramp and into the water when the small explosion occurred. Investigators suspect that the explosion was the result of fuel fumes ignited after a battery switch was turned on. A gasoline can was recovered near the boat, which possibly fueled the small fire. The majority of marina fires start on an individual boat and spread. It is fortunate this fire was quickly contained and extinguished before anyone else was hurt. Boat owners must take steps to prevent fires by having boat cords and fuel systems…
