Is the Number of Fatal Bicycle Accidents Increasing?

Despite attempts to make roads safer for riders, the number of fatal bicycle accidents is increasing in the United States. In 2014, there were 726 deaths and nearly 50,000 injuries from bicycle accidents. That represents a 28 percent increase in annual cycling fatalities since 1998, and an increase of 16 percent since 2010. Experts also noted that since many injuries are never reported, it’s possible the real numbers are actually much higher. Where Did the Numbers Increase? The number of children’s injuries on bikes has gone down, but at the same time more adults are getting hurt on the road, especially men and riders over 40 years old. This might have something to do with urban planning on streets vs. residential areas. Safety measures seem to be working to improve safety for children, including speed limits in residential areas and warning sings to let motorists know that they are entering…

Could Augmented Reality Improve Bicycle Safety?

Many already know how technology can distract drivers and create dangerous situations on the road, but is it possible that technical innovations will also help to improve bicycle safety? A team of commercial designers say yes, as they work to build an augmented reality helmet that might save lives. What is Augmented Reality? The idea of augmented reality is that virtual images are overlaid on the user’s vision. As opposed to virtual reality, which creates complete alternatives to real life, augmented reality simply makes a few additions to what we are already seeing. Could this New Bicycle Helmet Prevent Head Injuries?

Cycling is a great hobby with numerous health benefits, but it also causes a large number of head injuries and concussions. There are many reasons for this problem, but one is that traditional bicycle helmets aren’t cutting it. David Camarillo, a Stanford engineer, is hoping to create a new helmet that keeps riders safe from head injuries. According to Camarillo, today’s helmets do a great job at preventing skull fractures and traumatic brain injuries, but there are misconceptions about the extent that they will protect against concussions. The forceful impact of a crash can cause concussions regardless of whether or not the rider was wearing a helmet. As new studies continue to link concussions with major health issues later in life, the race to find a solution is getting more urgent. Will this New Helmet Prevent Head Injuries? The helmet was originally developed to persuade people to wear helmets more…
