Pedestrian safety in San Diego has become a high priority for city officials and law enforcement, with several deaths and injuries occurring at crosswalks in the last few months. One fatal accident occurred earlier in March, when a baby was tragically killed after an SUV ran through a crosswalk and hit her stroller. According to the driver, a palm tree had impeded his view. The accident has caused many San Diego residents to call for safer crosswalks. Another pedestrian accident happened in Del Mar when a woman and her dog were knocked into the air by a passing car. However, drunk driving accidents are not the only threat to motorists. Drugged driving has increasingly injured and killed innocent drivers. San Diego has had numerous drugged driving accidents that have resulted in catastrophic injury or death for innocent drivers. In 2012, an Air Force veteran drove under the influence of prescription medication, killing a 77-year-old La Jolla man and injuring his wife. According to police, the veteran was driving under the influence of Valium and three other prescription medications when she ran through a red light, slamming into the man and his wife. Distracted driving has become the number one cause of preventable car accidents involving young people across the nation. According to the Automobile Association of America, distracted driving is a factor in 58 percent of moderate to severe car accidents involving teenagers. AAA gathered the results by attaching dashboard cameras to the vehicles of more than 6,800 teenage drivers and then recorded any accidents. After analyzing nearly 1,700 videos, AAA concluded that distracted driving was responsible for 6 in 10 car accidents involving teenagers. Previous data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Association estimated that distracted driving was responsible for 14 percent of car accidents involving a teenage driver.
