Unfortunately, most people do not carry a taser or any weapon and may not have the training and reaction time these police officers have. Approximately 1,000 Americans are hospitalized daily for injury from a dog bite, according to DogsBite.org. 77 percent of these attacks from pit bulls, rottweilers and wolf hybrid breeds cause bodily harm, and 73 percent of those injured are children. Young Boy Killed in San Diego Dog Attack

An 8-month-old boy died in San Diego following a dog attack on June 14, according to MSNBC News. According to the San Diego Sheriff’s Department, it is possible that up to three dogs were involved in the attack. The young toddler was attacked around 5 pm on West Street, east of downtown San Diego. Lt. Larry Nesbit told reporters from The San Diego Union Tribune that officers responded to the scene within four minutes of the attack, and the boy was rushed to Rady’s Children Hospital, where he was pronounced dead from injuries sustained in the mauling. California Leads the US in Dog Bites

New statistics show that California leads the nation in insurance claims for dog bites, according to the Huffington Post. State Farm Insurance alone paid out over $109 million for 3,800 dog bite claims in California in 2011, said spokesman Eddie Martinez. In 2010, State Farm paid out $90 million for 3,500 claims in the state. Attacks and claims increased 31 percent in 2011 in California. All insurance companies paid $479 million for dog bite claims in the state in 2011, according to the Insurance Information Institute. “Most dog bites occur actually among a family pet or a known dog,” says ER Dr. Alan Nager. “It’s fairly rare to be bit by a stray dog.” Many people believe dog owners are only liable for injuries caused by a dog if the dog bit someone else in the past; however, this “one free bite” is not the law in California.
