LAPD Taking In-Depth Look at Boating Accidents

The Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department Parks Bureau is taking a proactive approach to reduce the number of boating accidents in the area, according to KHTS AM 1220. The LAPD launched an Advanced Accident Investigation Course to take an in-depth look at accidents and exactly what causes them. The new course was developed by the California Department of Boating and Waterways. The course implements physical reconstruction, evidence identification and collision examination. “There were 11 recreational boating accidents in 2010 and 2011 on Castaic and Pyramid Lakes, which are patrolled by Parks Bureau Boat Deputies,” says Captain Stephen Smith, Commander of Parks Bureau. “If we see how the accidents are happening, this will assist us in educating the public. Community Mourns Death of Junior Seau

The death of former NFL linebacker and San Diego legend Junior Seau has sent shockwaves throughout the community. Seau apparently took his own life on May 2 and died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Seau played for the San Diego Chargers the majority of his career, from 1990 through 2002, before leaving for the Miami Dolphins. Seau played his college career nearby at the University of Southern California. Along with being an exceptional talent on the field, Seau was known for his charity work and involvement in the community. Seau’s death comes at a time of great debate about how the NFL and football in general protects its players from brain injury. National Dog Bite Prevention Week starts off on May 20, so now is a great time to brush up on prevention tips and what to do if you are attacked by a dog. Over 4.7 million Americans are bitten by a dog annually. Over 800,000 are required to seek medical attention, and the most likely victims are children, followed by senior citizens. Keep the following in mind the next time you are out in your neighborhood or at a park, especially if you are with children: Be cautious around strange dogs and always trust your instincts. Never let babies or small children play with dogs. Always ask a dog owner’s permission before approaching a dog.
