      Fatal Bicycle Accidents in California On The Rise

      A bicyclist was tragically killed by a motorist on June 27 in Santa Cruz, according to SantaCruzWire.com.  Noel Hamilton, 31, was riding his bicycle near Soquel High School when he was struck by a car on Monday night.  The motorist fled from the scene. California has seen an increase in fatal bicycle accidents this year—this was the third hit-and-run fatality to claim the life of a cyclist.  According to reports, the motorist returned to the scene of the bicycle accident 40 minutes later. “We are doing a very thorough investigation,” California Highway Patrol spokeswoman Sarah Jackson told reporters.  “If someone returns to the scene and…claims to be the driver in an accident like this, we will fully investigate that claim.” This is a problem that is certainly not going away in Southern California, and needs to be pushed to the forefront of conversation in order for solutions to come to…

      Man Killed in Single Vehicle Accident

      According to 760 KFMB Talk Radio in San Diego, a car accident on July 24 claimed the life of a man.  The investigation is underway, but evidence may be difficult to obtain due to the fire that ensued following the crash. The driver was the only occupant of a Kia Rio that crashed into a tree off Route 94 near Euclid Avenue, according to the California Highway Patrol.  The accident happened between 11:30 p.m. and midnight on the Sunday night.  The car went off the side of the road and crashed into a tree before becoming entirely engulfed in flames, according to the accident report.  The victim did not have a chance to escape the vehicle due to damage to the driver’s door according to police, and burned to death while trapped in the car.       Young Man Killed in Tragic Bicycle Accident

      The California Highway Patrol is examining a fatal bicycle accident that occurred on July 18, according to BigBearGrizzly.net.  23-year-old Christopher Sop of Big Bear Lake was found unconscious along the side of Mill Creek Road, one mile south of Tulip Lane. The CHP responded to the report of a man lying down by the side of the road—the jurisdiction fell to the CHP because the bicycle accident occurred in an unincorporated part of Big Bear.  Sop was pronounced dead at the scene.  Investigators believe that Sop was riding north on Mill Creek Road at an undetermined speed when he lost control and went off the side of the road, striking a rock and then falling down a hillside. There is no suspicion of foul play at this time, but the California Highway Patrol and the San Bernardino County Coroner’s office are still conducting an investigation.
