Man Killed in Motorcycle Crash Near Los Angeles

A motorcycle crash killed a motorcyclist after he collided head on with a pickup truck in Los Angeles County, according to the California Highway Patrol. The 56-year-old man’s name is withheld. The accident occurred on the Ronald Reagan Freeway, on a transition road to the Golden State Freeway, according to the Half Moon Bay Review.

The motorcyclist swerved into oncoming traffic lanes near the southern entrance of a tunnel. The pickup truck driver suffered no injury. Respondents from the Coastside Fire Protection District, San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office and the California Highway Patrol pronounced the motorcyclist dead on the scene.

In 2009 there were 4,595 fatal motorcycle crashes. 84,000 others were injured in accidents. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimates that helmets are 37% effective in preventing fatalities and saved 1,483 lives in 2009.
