One Killed, One Arrested in Two University City Car Wrecks

Two separate car accidents on October 23 have left one person dead and another facing DUI and manslaughter charges, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune. In addition to the fatality and the arrest, five people were also injured between the two wrecks, which both happened in University City, California.

The first accident happened around 9 a.m. on Genesee Avenue just east of Interstate 5 near Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla. Police told the Union-Tribune that a 63-year-old woman was driving a Toyota Corolla south on Genesee, ran a red light and hit a GMC that was exiting the hospital’s driveway heading north. Both drivers were injured in the crash, with the driver of the GMC, a 41-year-old woman, suffering minor injuries and the driver of the Corolla suffering a major leg injury.

The second accident occurred just before 10:30 a.m. at the intersection of La Jolla Village Drive and Genesee, according to the La Jolla Patch. A woman was driving a Toyota Prius westbound on La Jolla Village Drive, ran a red light and crashed into an Audi and a Volkswagen Golf that were both traveling southbound on Genesee as well as a Nissan Titan truck that was traveling northbound. The Audi and Golf were attempting to make a left turn on a green light.

The driver of the Golf, a 70-year-old man, was killed in the collision, and a female passenger in the Golf suffered major injuries. Both the driver of the Audi and the driver of the Prius sustained minor injuries, while the driver of the Titan was not hurt. According to the report in the Union-Tribune, after the driver of the Prius had her injuries treated at a hospital, she was booked into jail under suspicion of drunk driving and manslaughter.

Irresponsible drivers not only put their own lives in danger but the lives of their passengers and anyone else who shares the road with them. Even if you drive responsibly, you can still be the victim of a car accident caused by another driver’s negligence.
