New hybrid and electric cars may provide a new challenge for firefighters and rescuers, according to the Detroit Free Press. When arriving at the scene of a car accident, firefighter Jason Emery explains, they are trained to disconnect the car’s battery. This shuts off the source of energy and prevents injury. Emery serves as the lead electric-vehicle safety instructor for the National Fire Protection Association. Car companies and the NFPA are working together to set standards for disconnecting the new lithium batteries in these vehicles. A standard could be set once the National Highway Safety Administration reviews post-crash electric test vehicles, which may protect automakers from products liability. GM is working on a battery that will be easy to detach. “Most emergency responders are going to be able to handle it,” said Emery. Citizens in Covina, California are calling for officials to set up a traffic light at the spot where two people were injured in a car accident on November 8, according to SGVTribune.com. Dozens of people gathered with signs and candles on the night of the accident at the crosswalk where the accident occurred. Two 14-year-old twin girls—Leilani and Luana Fukui–were struck at the crosswalk and remain hospitalized, in critical condition and on life support. A Honda Civic traveling 30 mph hit the girls, causing serious injuries to both of them. “They’re on machines that are helping them breathe,” says Rosa Saca, spokeswoman for Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center. “They’re have been many accidents here,” said resident Debbie Marin. “I’ve been here 30 years. I’ve seen a lot.” Do you think the city should put up a traffic light?
