Speeding Led to Sweetwater Trustee’s Chula Vista Car Wreck

The investigation into a July car accident that nearly killed Sweetwater trustee John McCann has uncovered that the other driver’s speeding caused the wreck. According to NBC 7 in San Diego, during the course of the investigation by Chula Vista Police, it was discovered that the vehicle that caused the accident was traveling 87 mph in a 45 mph zone. “It potentially could have winded up in a fatality if he had been driving any faster,” said McCann. As it was, McCann, 45, was transported to UCSD Medical Center after the accident with a head injury. The other driver, 50, was taken to Scripps Hospital with a small cut to his right forearm and back and knee pain. Troubling Tidbits from San Diego Distracted Driving Survey

A troubling new survey revealed that 30 percent of all drivers in San Diego are regularly distracted when they are behind the wheel, according to EHS Today. The Adult Cell Phone Survey was composed of research conducted between February 8 and March 31 of 2013, and to say the results are disturbing would be an understatement. “In this study, we were looking for the distracted driving trends of adults with children and employees [in the car],” said Linda Hill, MD, MPH and clinical professor for the Department of Family and Preventative Medicine at UC San Diego School of Medicine. “The results highlight the dangerous behavior of adults driving distracted, especially with children in the car, exposing both themselves and their children to increased risk for a crash. California Heavily Enforces Distracted Driving Month

Law enforcement officials in California issued more than 57,000 citations for distracted driving in April, which was Distracted Driving Awareness Month, according to KSEE 24 News. The California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) and the California Highway Patrol (CHP) teamed up to target distracted drivers across the state. “The month of April is behind us, however, distracted driving awareness education and enforcement continues for law enforcement statewide,” said CHP Commissioner Joe Farrow. “Inattention while driving is a dangerous behavior with potentially deadly consequences. Motorists, especially parents with impressionable children in the vehicle, are strongly encouraged to practice safe, legal driving behaviors.
