According to NBC 6 News in Corpus Christi, Texas, two women were killed following a tragic truck accident on June 13. The truck accident occurred in Nevada, where Esther Garza and Renee Upchurch were driving through to Utah to visit a sick relative.
Garza and Upchurch had pulled over on the side of the road outside of Reno when their SUV was struck by a truck belonging to the Nevada Department of Transportation. Upchurch was killed instantly and Garza was flown to a nearby hospital where she later died from her injuries.
Upchurch was a teacher and a coach at San Diego ISD, and Garza had recently retired as a coach.
“She meant a lot to a lot of people,” niece Jeneca Upchurch told reporters. “She was a teacher, she was a coach, she was a friend to a lot of students, a lot of athletes.”
Investigators are still determining the cause of the truck accident, and if any criminal charges will be filed following the wrongful death of Upchurch or Garza.
