San Diego Personal Injury Attorney Applauds UCSD Earthquake Tests

Researchers tested the structural strength of buildings at the University of California-San Diego to determine how safe they are in the event of a major earthquake, according to KPBS-TV. In 2012, experts built a five-story building model on top of an earthquake simulator and administered a “shake table” experiment that simulated the conditions of different scales of earthquakes to study the safety of the building. “Everything is full-sized,” graduate student Michelle Chen said after the 2012 test. “It’s the same sized columns you would see in a normal sized building. It’s basically the core of a whole structure.” Researchers repeated the experiment this year and found that fire is one of the most serious threats to the building in the event of an earthquake. The scientists started a fire inside of the building after simulating an earthquake and discovered it spread rapidly through the cracked infrastructure and greatly destabilized the…

Volunteer at California Animal Park Mauled to Death By Lion

A young woman volunteering at a zoo in Central California died after a lion attacked her in early March, according to sources. Diana Hanson, 24, was cleaning a cage at Cat Haven, a private zoo in Fresno County when a 550-pound male African lion lifted the partially-open door of the cage and attacked her. Hanson died immediately of a broken neck, according to Fresno County Coroner David Hadden. The victim’s family believes that the lion may have actually been trying to play with Hanson but the “rough play turned tragic.” “We’re thankful that she didn’t suffer,” Paul Hanson, Diana’s brother, told the Associated Press. “It sounds like it was an accident. Maybe the latch had not been completely closed … You know, because house cats are smart, they can open doors. It wasn’t a vicious attack … because you would expect severe lacerations and biting on the neck and that…

Experienced Sailor Killed Off Coast of Southern California

One man died in a sailboat accident in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of San Clemente Island on March 8, according to sources. Rescues crews were able to save five other crewmembers after their vessel was torn apart in rough waters, but Craig Williams did not survive. Williams and the crew were competing the annual Islands Race. Adverse weather and rough waters created difficult conditions for search teams attempting to rescue the crew. The Islands Race is run by the Newport Harbor yacht club and the San Diego yacht club, spanning 139 nautical miles in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Southern California. “Silver Gate Yacht Club is very sad to acknowledge the loss of one of our members, as well as the lost of a member’s boat,” read a statement from the yacht club Williams was a member of. “This is a tragedy for the families and…
