Study Confirms Los Angeles is Dangerous for Cyclists

Cyclists in Los Angeles have long claimed that it is a dangerous city for them, whether it is because of the aggressive motorists or high number of pedestrians and other cyclists. A recent study from the University of Michigan Transportation has confirmed their suspicions, according to the Los Angeles Times. According to the study, 2.8 percent of victims in traffic fatalities in Los Angeles are cyclists. This is nearly double the national average. Earlier this year, Governor Jerry Brown vetoed a bill that would have forced all motorists to give cyclists a three feet buffer zone when passing. “Drivers don’t look for bikes and we are almost invisible,” says South Pasadena cyclist Bill Sherman, who was recently hit by a car when he was attempting to make a left turn. Thirteen Injured in School Bus Accident

Thirteen children were injured in a school bus accident in Victorville, California on October 11, according to the Los Angeles Times. The school bus rolled over after nearly colliding with a U-Haul truck that was backing out of a driveway, according to reports. A total of 40 children were on the bus at the time of the accident, according to San Bernardino County Fire Department spokeswoman Tracey Martinez. The bus driver was also injured, and 11 of the students were hospitalized with various non-life threatening injuries. “A U-Haul truck being driven by Jenny Lynn Cordovam 48, of Victorville, was backing from a private driveway,” said California Highway Patrol Officer Joaquin Zubieta. “Cordova failed to see the school bus approaching and entered the [roadway] directly into the path of the school bus.” Drivers of U-Haul truck normally do not have experience driving larger vehicles and are only using them temporarily. A cyclist was struck and killed by a Los Angeles County sheriff’s patrol car in Inglewood early in the morning on October 8, according to the Los Angeles Times. The cyclist was identified as 45-year-old Alfonso Cerda. According to initial reports, police were attempting to stop Cerda and believed he had a handgun. No handgun was recovered at the scene. The accident occurred a half-mile away from the location where police shot and wounded an unarmed driver a day earlier. “They attempted to make an enforcement stop,” says Inglewood Police Lt. James Madia. “Initially, the individual complied, but then he took off on a bicycle.” There are many unanswered questions remaining about this case. Why did the police believe he had a weapon when he did not? Did the driver accidently strike him, or did he intentionally hit Cerda with his car in an attempt to stop him? Please visit…
