California Highway Patrol Educates Teen Drivers

The California Highway Patrol is offering a driver education class for teen drivers and their parents. Start Smart is targeting new and soon-to-be drivers ages 15 to 19. The most recent class was on March 6 at the Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital. The class features testimonies from CHP officers who have responded to fatal accidents involving teenagers as well as a Red Asphalt video to warn teens about the dangers and responsibilities that come with driving. The class teaches car accident avoidance tips as well. “The tragic loss of young lives is a concern to us, and this valuable program will improve the confidence and safety awareness of new drivers,” said CHP Captain Jeff Sgobba. Approximately 66% of fatal accidents in California involve teenage drivers. California has the second highest fatality rate for drivers age 15 to 20. Two Children Killed in Accident, Crash Remains under Investigation

A California truck accident claimed the lives of two children from Las Vegas on March 4, according to sources. The accident occurred on Interstate 15 near Baker, California, according to the California Highway Patrol. The victims, identified as 5-year-old Ariyana Daniel and 9-year-old Thurgood Marshall died at the scene. The children were riding with their mother in a 2012 Nissan that struck the back of a commercial truck at high speeds, according to reports. The truck was traveling uphill at approximately 25 mph. The children were reportedly not properly restrained. Forensic accident experts say the driver, a 25-year-old Las Vegas resident, took no actions to avoid hitting the truck before the collision. Motorcycle Accident Injures One Person, Kills One Cow

A motorcycle accident on February 26 in Sonoma County left one man hospitalized and one cow dead, according to the Napa Valley Register. Richard Watkins, 61, struck a cow while riding southbound on Highway 1, according to Officer Jon Sloat. Watkins flew from his bike and suffered major injuries—fortunately, he had his motorcycle helmet on. Paramedics airlifted Watkins to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital. The cow died at the scene. Many open-range cattle farms are in West Sonoma, where cattle roam in unfenced pastures. Sloat warned that all motorists should be especially cautious in the area. An estimated 92% of motorcyclists have never taken a safety course—they either taught themselves or learned from a friend. Proper safety classes and training reduces your accident risk significantly.
