One-Armed Man Rescued After Boating Accident

Harbor police in San Diego rescued a one-armed man on the morning of April 28 after a boating accident, according to SignOnSanDiego.com. After he was pulled out of the water, rescuers attempted to gain control of the unmanned 16-foot aluminum boat. Port of San Diego Ron Powell said the man was rescued approximately 200 yards from the boat ramp off Shelter Island. Witness Leo Turner was standing on the ramp watching the rescue.  He described the unmanned boat as going “pretty fast” in circles as the one-armed man attempted to swim away from its path.  He described the man as being in his mid to late 20’s.  Another boat pulled the man out of the water, avoiding catastrophic personal injury. Rescuers were unable to board and control the boat before it sank into the harbor.  They were still attempting to pull the boat out at the time of publication.

New Bill Increases Fines for Distracted Drivers

On April 25, the California State Senate approved a bill to increase the fines for texting while driving, according to Don Thompson of the Associated Press. California put a ban on texting while driving and the use of other mobile devices nearly three years ago. The base fee will increase from $20 to $50 for a first-time offense, but after associated fees a violator will end up paying approximately $328. A second violation would earn someone a point on his or her license, as well as a $528 fine. Senator Joe Simitian from Palo Alto said that his original bill three years ago deterred 60 to 70 percent of people from texting while driving, although there may be no definitive way to tell if it is actually a deterrent. CHP Spokeswoman Fran Clader said drivers don’t always admit to texting while driving when asked in surveys. “The goal here is simply to…

Murrieta Police Forced to Shoot “Vicious” Dog

Police in Murrieta earlier this month had to shoot a dog they believed to be a vicious pit bull mix as they were responding to a call from a woman walking her own dog, according to the MurrietaPatch.com. A woman became fearful that another aggressive dog might incite a dog attack as she walked her female boxer in a neighborhood, so she called police. Police responded to the call near the Whitewood Road and Alta Murrieta Road intersection.  They discovered the aggressive dog, owned by 25-year-old Justin Armstrong’s girlfriend.  Police had to shoot the dog to prevent a possible dog bite injury. The official breed of the dog was determined to be a Dogo Argentino and not a pit bull, as officers first believed. After receiving the shot to the head, the dog was able to return to its owner’s house on the 39600 block of Wildflower Road. Police arrested…
