California’s Proposed “Yellow Alerts” Could Help to Bring Hit-and-Run Drivers to Justice

Hit-and-runs seem like an incurable plague of the roads as the number of occurrences is disturbingly high. The biggest problem with hit-and-run drivers is that they are notoriously difficult to bring to justice because of how hard it is to find the negligent driver. Reasons a driver may choose to flee the scene of an accident include standing warrants for their arrest and/or drug or alcohol use. California is in the process of passing a bill that will provide a new tool for finding suspected hit-and-run drivers called Yellow Alerts. Like Amber Alerts, the Yellow Alert would be a freeway alert notice sent out to the masses on freeway message boards. These alerts would contain whatever information was available including car or culprit descriptions. Two Cyclists Die in Car Bike Accidents This Week

A 63-year-old Palo Alto cyclist died earlier this month after being struck by a car in Mountain View. The car crash happened Friday, July 10 at approximately 7:30 p.m. when the man was hit by the driver of a 2002 Honda Civic on San Antonio Road. Witnesses of the accident told police that the man may have suffered a traumatic head injury. Witnesses said he was unconscious but breathing. One witness responded to the Mountain View Police Department Facebook query for information by describing the incident as “horrific,” writing that the windshield and roof were caved in and the vehicle appeared totaled. The cyclist was transported to Stanford hospital, where he was pronounced dead Wednesday, July 15. The driver of the vehicle, a 70-year-old Los Altos Hills man, stayed at the scene and cooperated with police. He did not appear to be under the influence or sustain any injuries. Police have…

San Diego Cyclist Breaks Back After Being Hit By Car

An 18-year-old bicyclist sustained serious injuries when he was hit by a car July 8 in Linda Vista, San Diego. The accident occurred around 4:50 p.m. on Linda Vista Road near Ulric Street. The male teen was transported to the Intensive Care Unit at Sharp Memorial Hospital, where he was treated for and a broken lower back. The father said his son was in much pain and will be wearing a back brace, but he expects him to make a full recovery. The driver of the vehicle said she did not see the cyclist riding in the crosswalk. No charges have been filed, and the investigation is ongoing, according to San Diego police.
