California Woman Killed in Truck Accident

A truck accident claimed the life of a San Diego woman on January 24, according to East County Magazine. The San Diego Medical Examiner’s office identified the victim as Amanda Jean Blessum, 19, from Ramona. Blessum slid across the wet pavement in her Kia Spectra before a propane tanker truck slammed into her car. The collision occurred just after 2 p.m. “Due to her unsafe speed for conditions (wet roadway), she failed to maintain control of her vehicle,” says California Highway Patrol Officer Brian Pennings. “She crossed over the solid double yellow line directly into the path of a 2010 International Propane truck.” Police pronounced Blessum dead on the scene. She was not wearing a seat belt. Pennings said the truck driver, 62-year-old Richard Leroy, braked and swerved to avoid the collision but was unable to avoid it. He did not suffer any injuries. Women Indicted on Distracted Driving Charges after Fatal Collision

Officials suspect a distracted driver may be the cause of an Orange County fatal car accident last April, according to 10News.com in San Diego. Police believe that Jorene Nicolas, 29, was texting on her phone just before the accident. She denies the allegations. Deanna Mauer of Orange County died in the collision. “I have no priors. I have a clean driving record and I have no criminal history,” says Nicolas. “I don’t drink and drive (and) I was not texting as all those allegations have been trying to say I was.” Police arrested Nicolas at her home on January 27th. According to California Highway Patrol reports, Nicolas claimed her phone was in her cup holder at the time of the crash. “It was a tragic accident and we are constantly praying for her family and her soul—and will continue to pray for her family,” says Nicolas. Two Women Face Manslaughter Charges Following Fatal Dog Attack

In January, a mother and daughter were charged with involuntary manslaughter after a fatal dog attack six months ago, according to 10 News in San Diego. Alba Cornelio, 39, and her 20-year-old daughter, Carla own two female pit bulls who escaped their backyard and attacked and killed their 75-year-old neighbor. Both women plead not guilty. If convicted they face up to 4 years and 8 months in prison. They face additional charges for failing to protect the public from a dangerous animal. The victim died three weeks after the attack, which is when the prosecution increased the charges to manslaughter. The dogs also escaped previously in 2010, attacking a puppy and its owner. In the current case, the prosecution argues that the defendants did not take all precautions to secure the dangerous canines.
