How San Diego Is Making it Safer For Cyclists

The City Council of San Diego voted on plans to make the city safer for cyclists. The City Council’s Environment Committee voted this past Thursday on a new implementation plan. This plan will amend the current Bike Master Plan, which was adopted in 2013. The 2013 Bike Master Plan is a strategic implementation plan that promotes bicycle safety, policy, and infrastructure. The new implementation, proposed to city council by the Bicycle Advisory Committee, will cost upwards of $300 million. The new master plan addresses more bicycle related needs such as bicycle roadways, education and other programs that help to improve the San Diego bicycle community overall. Tesla Autopilot Crashes Continue to Pile Up

Autopilot is a semi-autonomous feature that comes with Tesla’s new vehicles. This feature can help motorists change lanes, maintain a following distance, apply the brakes and perform other maneuvers. However, Autopilot has been involved in several recent crashes, several of which occurred in California. In late March, an Apple engineer was killed when his Tesla Model X crashed into a highway median on Highway 101. Tesla announced that Autopilot was engaged before the crash. According to the deceased man’s family, he complained that Autopilot kept trying to steer him into the median in the weeks before the crash. Other Tesla owners showed their vehicles swerving near the same spot where the crash occurred. Another recent Tesla accident occurred in Culver City, California earlier this year. AAA Report Finds Fatal Hit and Runs Are Increasing

A new study released by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety (AAA) claims that fatal hit and run accidents continue to increase. As the name implies, a hit and run crash is where a motor vehicle strikes someone else and leaves the scene. According to AAA, fatal hit and runs have increased by 7 percent each year since 2009. Almost 65 percent of the victims were cyclists and pedestrians. In 2016, an astonishing 2,049 people died in hit and run crashes – the highest number on record. An average of 682,000 hit and run crashes occur each year. Why are hit and runs increasing? There could be a few possible causes, such as: More vehicles and cyclists on the road.
