Teenage Girl Killed In Accident On I-5

A 14-year-old girl is dead after a tragic car accident on I-5 on November 27, according to sources. The Ford Expedition in which the young girl was a passenger flipped into a ditch off the side of the highway. The driver of the Ford Expedition was 33-year-old Bernice Butterfield, according to California Highway Patrol officer Jared Blankenship. The accident occurred as the driver was attempting to merge into the right lane without noticing a vehicle in her blind spot. The driver lost control and swerved off the highway. The driver and four other passengers were taken to the hospital, and the young girl was pronounced dead at the scene. “All occupants were properly restrained, which prevented them from sustaining more serious injuries; however, the nature of the collision and the severe extent of damage to the rear of the vehicle caused fatal injuries to the passenger,” the CHP released in…

US Department of Transportation Bans Truck Drivers Using Cell Phones

The US Department of Transportation (US DoT) ruled that interstate commercial truck drivers may no longer use cell phones or handheld devices of any kind, according to sources. Violators can face up to $2,750 fines for each instance, and repeat offenders risk losing their commercial vehicle licenses. Companies who fail to enforce the regulation for drivers face fines up to $11,000. US DoT research shows that drivers reaching for an object—such as a phone—are three times more likely to cause a truck accident. When using the phone, the chances increase to 6 times as likely. “This final rule represents a giant leap for safety,” said US DoT administrator Anne Ferro. “It’s just too dangerous for drivers to use a hand-held cell phone while operating a commercial vehicle. San Diego Pedestrian Killed By SUV

A 25-year-old pedestrian died in a car accident on November 20 in El Cajon, according to SignOnSanDiego.com. The victim was Melissa N. Ferreira of San Diego, according to the county Medical Examiner’s office. Ferreira and a male were crossing the street when a white SUV struck them, according to police reports. The pedestrians were both wearing dark clothing. The driver stopped immediately at the scene. Police do not believe speed or alcohol played a part in the accident. Ferreira was pronounced dead at the scene. This tragic accident is a terrible reminder of how vulnerable pedestrians can be. If you are walking near roads at night, make sure you are paying attention and walking in a well-lit area. Try to wear light colored clothing so you are more visible to motorists.
